One of the members over at XDS has posted some nice instructions on how to root.  Check it out.

For a while now Ubuntu has offered what is known as a Wubi install.  It is a virtual install withing a Windows operating system.  It acts like the real operating system but makes no major changes to the operating system.  It is a great way to take a first step into the world of Linux without much risk.

A very well written guide has been posted.  Check it out at the link below.

Gizmodo is reporting that AMD is releasing an 8 core Processor, code named Bulldozer, to compete with the recently releaced i3-i7 series that Intel has been pushing. Boasting a new architecture AMD is claming better performance between cores than the Intel counterparts.

I am hoping this will again move AMD to the top of the processor list.

The title says it all.  After weeks of working with the Droid X they now have a working Recovery available.  This opens the way for custom Droid X roms, kernels, Over Clocking, and all the goodies that come with such things.

It is still very new and in heavy development so I would not jump on it yet.  However shooting them a donation for the hard work is always appreciated and will help to motivate them to keep up the work.

My Brain Hurts: Droid X Recovery.

No, I have not been keeping up an the Droid 2.2 update drama.  Honestly I am still a bit scarred from the 2.1 update drama.

Short version: It is rolling out in phases now.  Check our friends at the link below for some good inside information.

It is finally here, The Simply Stunning 4.7 Rom for Motorola Droid.

Some features:

1. Screen lag on any of the launchers should be improved! That being said – I really do recomment another launcher. I’m partial to ADW - http://www.androlib.com/android.application.org-adw-launcher-FEjB.aspx, VERY small memory footprint. It is also now an option in RM, which also installs an ‘mvadw’ script. If you DO use another launcher, use my tools to DELETE the stock Launcher2 (it will back up to SD). Otherwise, it will still take resources even though you don’t run it.

2. You can now control your tunes (Media Player, Pandora tested) while the screen is off! Longpress volume up/down to skip tracks. Camera focus (lightpress) to pause/play. Camera shutter (hardpress) to toggle the extended media controls on/off (not permanent like Tools UI which sticks beyond a reboot). I did NOT add graphical controls to the lockscreen. To me it seems pointless.

3. Google fix for Pandora (all streaming AAC) included – this is NOT the hack that disabled stagefright; this has FIXED stagefright

4. Ability to change the carrier text to whatever you want! Should not affect any other apps.

5. Now when you ‘delete’ system apps, they are backed up to SD. So just in case you want it back .. you can get it back

If you have ROM Manager it is available to download n0w.  If not head over to his new site below to get the details and download.

Canonical is pleased to announce the release of uTouch 1.0, Ubuntu’s multi-touch and gesture stack. With Ubuntu 10.10 (the Maverick Meerkat), users and developers will have an end-to-end touch-screen framework — from the kernel all the way through to applications. Our multi-touch team has worked closely with the Linux kernel and X.org communities to improve drivers, add support for missing features, and participate in the touch advances being made in open source world. To complete the stack, we’ve created an open source gesture recognition engine and defined |a gesture API that provides a means for applications to obtain and use gesture events from the uTouch gesture engine.

Our multi-touch work began in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, when we worked to get additional touch hardware supported in the Linux kernel, particularly the Dell XT2, HP tx2 tablets and the Lenovo T410s laptops. With that in place, and active development in X well under way, we reviewed our options for gesture recognition in Linux. The Maverick cycle has seen us produce several prototypes for gesture recognition software and the Ubuntu archives now include the results of that effort.

Now I am really excited about 10.10.  Release will be in October so we have a bit to wait.  I will move one of my computers over once the Beta is released so we will have some good information for you at that point.

The eBook wars continue to heat up, and the latest shots came when Amazon released their Kindle application for Android Devices.  Not to be outdone, and late as ever, Barnes and Nobles has released their counter, the Nook application for Android.

Da Nook....only smaller

This app links into your account at B&N allowing you to download and read your books.

After the first screen you are presented with your library interface where you can pick books to download or read ones you have already downloaded.

My wifes bookshelf.....

I have not used the Kindle app for Android yet but comparing this to the iOS version of the Kindle app I found it a bit lacking in the visual department but with more information.  A simple tap takes to you a Synopsis and the ability to lend the book to another Nook user for 2 weeks (if available).

I did not take a screenshot of the purchase book section because it is just the B&N web page.  You also do not have access to magazines and newspapers like the Nook does.

Onto the reading, you have your choice of several different color schemes including a Day and Night.  Letters are crisp and a good size by default.

This can all be edited in the settings area

I found it very easy to customize my viewing experience and with a few clicks had a very readable device.  While the screen does not compair to the Nook it does work well when you need your reading fix.

Fancy page turning, for that paper book feel.

Overall this app does a great job of giving you access to your library.  However it fails in several key areas including the lack of magazines and purchasing of new material.  In both of these cases the full Nook is the better choice.

However if you find yourself Nookless this app does fill the void, giving you full access to your library and allowing you to lend your books out without having to drag the device everywhere.

From our good friends at XDA comes Tamagotchi, the very first virtual pet game.  But now it is in Android form.

We all knew it was on the way but Droidninja got the official word on the new Motorola Droid.

Key updates include a new keyboard, faster processor, and 2.2 stock.

Expect the bootloader to be encrypted, making custom roms near impossible.
